How to Secure Your Bank Account (Simple Steps that Actually Work)

How to Secure Your Bank Account (Simple Steps that Actually Work)
4:17

Your bank account holds your hard-earned money. Whether you’re at work, driving around town, or on a vacation with family, the last thing you need is someone stealing from you online. The good news? Protecting your money doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here’s a simple, no-nonsense guide to locking down your financial accounts.

1. Use Strong Passwords (Not the Same One Everywhere)

Do you use the same password for everything? If you do, that’s risky. If a hacker gets into one account, he or she can try that same password on your bank account or other financial accounts. Here are the top three things you can do to protect your bank password.

What to do:

  • Use a different password for your bank than anything else

  • Make it at least 12 characters long

  • Avoid easy guesses like birthdays or “Password123”

If you want even more tips, learn more from the Federal Trade Commission’s password guidelines, or read our blog, “How to Keep Your Financial Information Safe Online.”

2. Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

This is one of the best protections you can use. With 2FA, known as two factor authentication, even if someone gets your password, they still can’t get in without a second code, which is usually sent to your phone.

What to do:

  • Go into your banking app settings

  • Turn on “Two-Factor Authentication” or “Multi-Factor Authentication”

  • Choose text message or an authenticator app (authenticator apps like Google or Microsoft are free to download.) Authenticator apps are the safer option between the two.

The FTC has a great article explaining in detail what 2FA is and why it is so important. Check it out here.

3. Don’t Click Suspicious Links

Scammers often pretend to be your bank. They’ll text or email you saying something like: “Your account is locked. Click here to fix it.” That link? It’s fake!

What to do:

  • Never click links from unknown messages

  • If you’re unsure, go directly to your bank’s official app or website

  • Call your bank using the number on your card

4. Use Your Bank’s Mobile App (Not Public Wi-Fi)

Checking your account on public Wi-Fi (like at a coffee shop or airport) can expose your info to hackers.

What to do:

  • Use your bank’s official mobile app

  • Avoid logging in on shared or public computers

  • If you must use Wi-Fi, make sure it’s secure (or use your phone data)

5. Set Up Alerts

Most banks let you set alerts for things like large purchases, withdrawals, and low balances. This helps you catch problems fast.

What to do:

  • Turn on text or app alerts or notifications for your phone

  • Check your account regularly, such as once a day. (This only takes 30 seconds.)

6. Keep Your Phone and Apps Updated

Yes, it can be annoying when you need to update your phone. But this isn’t just for visual appeal or new widgets. Most updates by your phone provider are designed to fix security holes. When you skip them, you leave yourself and your device exposed.

What to do:

  • Update your phone when prompted

  • Keep your banking app up to date

  • Use a lock screen (PIN, fingerprint, or face ID)

7. Watch for Skimming at ATMs and Gas Pumps

You’ve probably heard something about criminals who install devices that steal your bank or credit card info onto gas station pumps. This can look like loose or unusual card slots on the gas pump or anything on the pump that looks like it’s been tampered with.

What to do:

  • Inspect the pump first

  • Cover the keypad when entering your PIN

  • If you suspect anything suspicious, walk inside and pre-pay

8. Check Your Bank Statements

Last, but certainly not least, is to check your bank statement. While this sounds like a simple, expected activity, it’s also very powerful. Small, unexpected changes in your account can be a sign of fraud.

What to do:

  • Review your bank transactions weekly

  • Report anything suspicious right away

Take the Time to Protect Your Bank Account

You work hard for your money. Taking a few minutes to secure your accounts can save you from a major headache later. You don’t need to be a tech expert, either. These eight simple steps help you stay alert, use the tools your bank gives you, and gain confidence to trust your gut when something feels off.
